What and Where is Svalbard ?

Svalbard is an archipelago situated 1000km south of the North Pole, in the Norwegian Arctic, it is a wild area extending over 60 000km², of which 60% are covered by glaciers and ice caps.

With less than 3000 inhabitants on an area more than twice the size of Belgium, Spitsbergen is a true desert. The “towns” of Longyearbyen (Norwegian) and Barentsburg (Russian) are only isolated enclaves of the civilized world in the heart of this virgin, inhospitable and fascinating land. Polar bears, totalling over 3000 individuals, still rein this island!
